In some Slavic traditions, Dimitrovden (St. Demetrius’ Day) on October 26 marks the end of the summer half of the year and the beginning of the winter half. It is a season of harvest and intriguing traditions such as expulsion of mice and protection against wolves. People turn away from outside work and gather together for inside festivities. Planina celebrates the season with a collection of tunes that show off the vibrant diversity of Eastern European music — from village-style songs with folk instruments to full-bodied choral arrangements.
